Springfield Urban League Begins “Freedom Project”

SPRINGFIELD (March 11, 2024) - The Springfield Urban League (Springfield, IL) is embarking on an exciting initiative called the Freedom Project, in collaboration with the National Parks Service (NPS) and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).

 This innovative program is designed to focus on historical education, literacy, leadership skills, and civic engagement among young individuals. Zhavier Harris, the marketing and communications manager for the Springfield Urban League, emphasized the project's aim to empower youth by bridging the gap between past struggles, like the journey from slavery to freedom, and their present realities, instilling a sense of pride and empowerment in their history.

The Urban League of Greater Madison Hosts Fireside Chat on Race

MADISON (March 11, 2024) - The Urban League of Greater Madison's (Madison, WI) Black Business Hub recently hosted a poignant discussion featuring Dr. Richard Harris, who shared his experiences with racial discrimination and his efforts to preserve South Madison as a safe haven for Black families.

During the chat hosted by Dr. Ruben Anthony, President and CEO of the Urban League, Harris recounted his upbringing in 1930s Madison, where he learned valuable lessons from his father about compassion and from his mother, a member of the Women of South Madison, about fighting racial discrimination. Harris fondly remembered the strength of the Black women in his community who stood up against injustice.

NEW YORK (March 11, 2024) - The National Urban League recently released its 2024 State of Black America Report, a vital document that sheds light on the ongoing struggles and progress of Black Americans in various spheres of life. Established in 1976 by Vernon E. Jordan Jr., the report has become a crucial resource for understanding the challenges faced by the Black community across areas like economics, education, health, and more.
